If you are reading this article on a website about electric lawn mowers, then you probably already have your own opinion on the gas versus electric lawn mower issue. Most people will list the obvious reasons why electric lawn mowers are great (no gas, no exhaust, less noise, etc), but I think it’s equally important to understand what an electric lawn mower is not.

How many screwdrivers do you have in your toolbox right now? If you are like me, the number is probably too many to count. I have at least 5 different Philips-head screwdrivers. Why? Well they are different sizes and used for different purposes. There are lots of different jobs that require a Philips screwdriver, and for each job, you select the best screwdriver.

Likewise, a lawn mower is a tool that should be matched to the job. If you were given the task to mow the median on a 20 mile long stretch of Interstate 10, what kind of lawn mower would you use? Most likely some sort of tractor mower. If you owned a townhouse and were responsible for mowing just the small tract of grass within your backyard fence (say 20′ by 20′), would you still want to use that tractor mower? Of course not.

Electric lawn mowers, both corded and cordless, have increased in popularity over the past 3 decades. Why? Because there are lots of us out there that have small to medium sized lawns and value the benefits of a smaller, lighter electric lawn mower. We value not having to fuss with spilled gasoline, exhaust fumes, and finicky, sometimes hard to start internal combustion engines that have to be maintained season after season.

Are there drawbacks to electric lawn mowers? Of course. We have to mow while dragging an extension cord around the yard. We have to coil up the extension cord when we finish. We have to remember to charge our battery if we’ve gone the cordless route. An electric lawn mower just isn’t going to cut it on a 1 acre lawn.

In summary, the choice between a gas and electric lawn mower is no different than choosing between a push mower and a tractor. Pick the mower that is best suited to your lawn and your needs.
